REVIEW | Merry Grainger is at her wit’s end. It’s Christmas, but nothing is going according to “The Most Wonderful Time of Year” adage. The latest disaster finds her stranded along side the road. Her cute albeit smug rescuer isn’t helping anything.

As Merry starts the holiday season with her family, she discovers her mother has her eye on the latest eligible bachelor, and much to Merry’s dismay she knows him. Sam is the cute guy who rescued her. Only trouble is, she isn’t interested in being the center of a match-making scheme. If only Sam weren’t quite so appealing… Continue reading “Wrapped in Red by Meghan M. Gorecki – A Cozy Christmas Story with an Emphasis on Family”

REVIEW: Have you ever read a book you thought sounded like a charming bit of fluff? You know the kind. That was my initial reaction to Just One Summer. A novella collection brainstormed by four talented authors who are taking the indie world of publishing by storm. What I did not realize was just how fast and thoroughly I was going to fall head over heels in love with the four stories they created. There’s such a diverse world of emotions captured in this fleeting bit of joy. As a whole story, it works almost in sync with its counterparts despite it being able to pull individual sets prompts, each with their own voice. The overall plot is about four lifelong friends who are stepping out on their own for their first summer apart. Who do we meet? First is Joss, a girl tired of pretending everything is right in her family; Sydney is trying to find her independence after a bad relationship with a guy wanting her to follow her father’s idea of “perfect”; the homeschool graduate, Darby, who finds herself while working at a tattoo parlor along with some help from her boss, Lennon; and finally there is Avery, who has ghosts of her own to confront – even if it means visiting the grandfather she never wanted to know to do that. REVIEW: As part of my mental exercise of expanding my reading palate, apparently part of my unspoken 2015 goal is to read more novellas. It seems like the past two months alone have involved paging through novellas, all of which have been amazing reads. My latest find is from the pen of Katie Ganshert and as per usual is one of the sweetest little stories I’ve yet to read. The story is simple: A young woman, Amelia meets Nate thanks to a serendipitous case of happenstance. Through a series of flubs, the pair wind up writing emails; letters that tell the other person much. When Nate eventually pursues a relationship that involves finding Amelia in person, she’ll have to admit to the one thing that might drive him away before they’ve even had a chance to begin…  Continue reading “The Perfect Arrangement by Katie Ganshert”

REVIEW: Novellas were never my thing as a reader. Or at least I didn’t think they were. Fortunately, I chose to ignore that niggling at the back of my mind and forged ahead. Since then, I’ve read a handful or more novellas that were absolutely and I might not have discovered had I let my prejudice affect my decisions. This is one such novella. Following up her 2015 release Coral Nocturne, new-on-the-scene author Elisabeth Grace Foley gives her readers what I’d assume is another (I’ve yet to read her debut), charming coming-of-age story. REVIEW: What began in Undeniably Yours draws to a swoon-worthy close in this sweet novella that is more “chapter story” than anything else. Without breaking itself into sections, this scene-long story gives us a peek into the lives of two characters we began to root for in A Love Like Ours, Becky last Porter family novel. The story is as simplistically sweet as it is perfect, about single mom Amber and the kind (not to mention good-looking) single father fireman Will, who captures her guarded heart. Having been dating for seven months, Amber and Will have discussed their future, but recently Will hasn’t been as excited about that future leading Amber to doubt what’s next. A flat tire, walk in the rain and Christmas carols are all involved in what comes next – which is, of course perfectly festive.   Continue reading “The Proposal by Becky Wade”

Review: My exposure to the Year of Weddings collection (published by Zondervan, a house under the HarperCollins umbrella) has been limited. I have one of the paperback collections on my shelf and read one other thanks to a blog tour. When I learned rom-com author extraordinaire Becky Wade was contributing a novella to this year’s line up, I knew, without question it’d be a must read. Texas as the home base might set the stage for most of her novels, but this one is “fresh.” It steps away from her beloved, rooted-in-Texas Porter clan to introduce readers to an entirely new set of characters. Lest you be worried this doesn’t live up to the quirky albeit loveable family, I’d like to convince you otherwise.   Continue reading “Love in the Details by Becky Wade”
