REVIEW | One of my weaknesses is historical settings set in or around the 1900s. I know the blame for this lies squarely on the shoulders of Julian Fellowes and a little drama called Downton Abbey. This is partial reason why the debut novel of Rachel McMillan rose up to be one of my most anticipated reads of 2016. Never mind its premise being completely different, it became the one novel I was 99.9% sure of 100% adoring. Helping to sell this educated guess of mine was the beautiful and swirly cover art that featured the old-fashioned art of silhouettes to say nothing of its gorgeous swirly font. As I turned the pages, within the span of 10-15, I was swept into Rachel’s Toronto and the fascinating historical setting of 1910. Review | For Rayne Shelby, accomplishing one career aspiration has become her purpose. Her long held dream has been to take over the family lodge. Her uncle keeps a tight rein on the family, but in his absence (traveling with her politician father as his campaign manager), Rayne is ready to step out of his shadow. And then she makes one mistake. A mistake that, in the eyes of her uncle, is proof positive she’s unable to “protect” the Shelby family name.

Levi is a successful business man whose past is riddled with scars. He’s also happens to have a soft spot for Rayne, and has ever since their senior year. Only trouble is, Levi is associated with the man, Rayne’s family blames for derailing their heritage. REVIEW: Stars are finally aligning for Alexis Murphy. She has an adoring fiancé, Jeffrey, and with him, she’s planning a fairytale wedding with Grace Evangeline. All is made sweeter since Grace is married to Exi’s cousin, Devin, the guy who still affectionately calls her by the childhood nickname. Her otherwise ideal life hits a snag when Exi meets Bo Corrigan, the one man Devin distrusts most.

Bo is walking, breathing trouble. Grace sees more to him, but when he expresses interest in Exi, all Devin can see is an infuriating charmer out to break hearts. Bo is struggling internally with his lifestyle. He isn’t sure what he wants and questions everything: including his sketchy past and his infatuation with Exi. All of which could cost Bo a great deal more that he is willing to give. Continue reading “Told You Twice by Kristen Heitzmann – Emotionally Investing and Raw”

REVIEW: With each new novel an author publishes, I’d imagine there are jitters. No matter how practiced one is, losing that agitation over the release of a novel likely stays with you. In the Indie world of publishing, I’d guess such emotions are magnified given that, while there are many people who assist you with the story, you are in control of releasing the book you’ve poured tears and smiles into. One of my most favorite authors (ever) is Jenny B. Jones. I discovered her particular brand of bookish happiness when she was signed with Thomas Nelson (Harper Collins) and now, after many years away from the author-ing gig, she returns with a select few novels published in the Indie world. I’ll Be Yours is her latest, and by Jove, it’s not one to be missed.   Continue reading “I’ll Be Yours by Jenny B. Jones – A Five-Star Stunner for the Keeper Shelf”

REVIEW: The Scottish adventures of best friends Vee and Mackenna draw to a close in Forever Doon, the final novel of the series. As the story opens, things pick up immediately where Shades of Doon (book three) left off. Vee is in Doon while Mackenna is stuck in contemporary Scotland without means of returning to the place she now thinks of as home. Vee believes her beloved Jamie is dead and gone leaving Doon’s queen solely responsible for the safety of their people. With the Brig o’ Doon destroyed (a feat orchestrated to protect their people), Mackenna and Duncan strive to keep those who managed to cross the bridge safe. But with an evil soul on the throne of Doon, their greatest battle is yet to come. Continue reading “Forever Doon by Carey Corp and Lorie Langdon – The Final Journey to Doon”

Every emotion is heightened thanks to these characters and their troubled pasts. There’s highs and lows as they reconcile with their mess of a past (especially for Katie) and amid it all, you’ll smile through the tears.”

REVIEW: Have you ever read a book you thought sounded like a charming bit of fluff? You know the kind. That was my initial reaction to Just One Summer. A novella collection brainstormed by four talented authors who are taking the indie world of publishing by storm. What I did not realize was just how fast and thoroughly I was going to fall head over heels in love with the four stories they created. There’s such a diverse world of emotions captured in this fleeting bit of joy. As a whole story, it works almost in sync with its counterparts despite it being able to pull individual sets prompts, each with their own voice. The overall plot is about four lifelong friends who are stepping out on their own for their first summer apart. Who do we meet? First is Joss, a girl tired of pretending everything is right in her family; Sydney is trying to find her independence after a bad relationship with a guy wanting her to follow her father’s idea of “perfect”; the homeschool graduate, Darby, who finds herself while working at a tattoo parlor along with some help from her boss, Lennon; and finally there is Avery, who has ghosts of her own to confront – even if it means visiting the grandfather she never wanted to know to do that. Without Warning is a wonderful novel not to be underestimated or overlooked. Its brilliant writing coupled with its kick-butt heroine (and hero who had me at “Marine”) who is as capable of rescuing as she is of being rescued…

REVIEW: Katie Singleton’s personal and professional life is wrought with tragedy. But the one constant in her life is her work as an elite bodyguard at Elite Guardians. Her current client she happened upon quite by accident. Though he’s known for his string of popular gourmet restaurants, Daniel Matthews never expected to be the subject of a stalker. When Katie becomes involved in Daniel’s life after a suspected arsonist sets his restaurant ablaze, and the discovery of a body, Katie assists the former Marine in discovering who is behind this. REVIEW: Some novels pull you in with an instantaneous “tug” that grabs hold of your reader’s heart, and refuses to let go long after a well-designed opening. Such was the case with Kristy Cambron’s marvelous gem of a novel. Beginning with the “end” and tumbling back three years prior to the prologue, I don’t think there is ever a dull moment in this novel. Before I step further into my thoughts of ‘Ringmaster,’ let me introduce you to the characters you’ll meet.   Continue reading “The Ringmaster’s Wife by Kristy Cambron – Atmospheric Jazz Under the Big Top”

REVIEW: Hours after I finished what is, the final novel in author Ronie Kendig’s Quiet Professional series, I’m sitting here, trying to process everything.
