REVIEW | As a reader who (for reasons unknown) best loves the contemporary genre, reading Courtney Walsh’s novels was high on my priority list. But despite best intentions I’d not opened the pages to discover her brand of Story. Until now. Inside these pages, a story of joy, disappointment, betrayal and the healing power of forgiveness unfold, all of which rises to the surface as each of these layers is beautifully peeled away.  Continue reading “Change of Heart by Courtney Walsh – a Complex Contemporary Novel with Depth”

Review: I’ve never been what someone would call an avid reader of historical events or figures. Any kind of historical “biography” type story kind of scares me off. Those I do experience are exclusive to the silver screen, which we all know is often skewed to suit entertainment purposes. That is also where anything I know about Martin Luther really came from as I vaguely remember watching the film starring Joseph Fiennes in the role of Luther. When I learned Jody Hedlund was tackling the iconic figure, I confess my reaction was one of neutrality. However, it’s safe to posit I have a different opinion now I’ve actually read this nearly 400-page tome…  Continue reading “Luther and Katharina by Jody Hedlund”

Review: My exposure to the Year of Weddings collection (published by Zondervan, a house under the HarperCollins umbrella) has been limited. I have one of the paperback collections on my shelf and read one other thanks to a blog tour. When I learned rom-com author extraordinaire Becky Wade was contributing a novella to this year’s line up, I knew, without question it’d be a must read. Texas as the home base might set the stage for most of her novels, but this one is “fresh.” It steps away from her beloved, rooted-in-Texas Porter clan to introduce readers to an entirely new set of characters. Lest you be worried this doesn’t live up to the quirky albeit loveable family, I’d like to convince you otherwise.   Continue reading “Love in the Details by Becky Wade”

Review: Discovering blogging friends are living their dreams through publishing is one of the most exciting things the book blogging community can be a part of. I’ve “known” at least three bloggers who are pursing that exact dream, and have been able to play a small part in helping two of them launch their novels in the world. One of those talented souls is Rachelle Rea. Her debut, The Sound of Diamonds is now officially out in the world and today, I’d like to talk about that novel. It follows the story of young Gwyn, a Catholic girl who’s hidden herself away at a convent in order to forget the tragedy she’s experienced in her young life – and to hide away from him. Dirk knows he’s the man Gwyn believes responsible for the death of her parents. Because of this, she isn’t willing to walk out the door with him when he shows up concerned for her safety, asking her to travel with him and his companions to England. Thus sets into motion a literal and emotional journey of healing, danger and forgiveness. Continue reading “The Sound of Diamonds by Rachelle Rea”

Book: Winning Balance

About the Book:
Author: Shawn Johnson
Publisher: Tyndale
Publication Date: 2012
Genre: Autobiography, General
Rating: 4 out of 5

My Thoughts: There probably are not many of us who have not heard of the pint-sized, gold-medal-winning gymnast who won over the heart of America at the 2008 Olympic Games. If her name is not familiar from the sport that she excels at, then you probably “met” her on the eighth season of ABC’s Dancing with the Stars (which she also won). This book is a journal of sorts that she has written for her fans about her life so far – her growth in maturity and her faith; the lessons life has taught her and getting back to the place where she is more happy – and healthy. It is rare that I read books in which the celebrity name emblazoned on the front shares their life’s story. My tastes seem more suited to fiction but I do not regret having read this book in the least. Not knowing much about Shawn’s private life so much as her professional one (even that is limited), I enjoyed getting to “know” her as a person and not a mere celebrated figure who’s spotlight was made bright by her appearance at the Olympics – and subsequently her gold-medal win. If you’ve followed this athlete, I’d wager that in reading this, you will learn a lot of things about Shawn you didn’t know. Some that may even surprise you. Continue reading “Book: Winning Balance”
