Review: They say fiction imitates life. This seems to be true of the latest in Bloomsbury’s “If Only” line. The fifth novel is like a backdoor snapshot of political life, only it’s seen through the eyes of two sixteen-year-olds. In this case it’s Katie, daughter of the republican candidate for president and Drew, son of the democratic candidate. The two meet while participating in a joint television interview, and wind up spending the day together. What they discover they like is getting to know each other without the pressures of their parents campaigns, which may be exactly what will end up driving them apart.   Continue reading “Red Girl, Blue Boy by Lauren Baratz-Logsted”

Review: Historical fiction, no matter the market or genre, is hit or miss for me. I enjoy history, but certain periods in time do little to capture interest. Perhaps it might have something to do with having seen a period drama visualize a period in history that didn’t appeal, or maybe it’s simply the aptitude of the characters effect. It’s not difficult to understand why. Continue reading “The Mistress of Tall Acre by Laura Frantz”

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Review: My exposure to the Year of Weddings collection (published by Zondervan, a house under the HarperCollins umbrella) has been limited. I have one of the paperback collections on my shelf and read one other thanks to a blog tour. When I learned rom-com author extraordinaire Becky Wade was contributing a novella to this year’s line up, I knew, without question it’d be a must read. Texas as the home base might set the stage for most of her novels, but this one is “fresh.” It steps away from her beloved, rooted-in-Texas Porter clan to introduce readers to an entirely new set of characters. Lest you be worried this doesn’t live up to the quirky albeit loveable family, I’d like to convince you otherwise.   Continue reading “Love in the Details by Becky Wade”
