Review: the saying goes, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” however I confess, my interest in this novel stemmed purely from being attracted to its polished, yet beautifully unrefined cover design. It seemed the perfect portrait of a genuine moment of love, which is what made it stand out. After that, I found the synopsis sounded equally charming which made me happy since I’m a big fan of contemporary romance. We begin by journeying with Kate Darby back to her grandmother, Leona’s small hometown of Meadow after she gets a heart-stopping phone call that her grandmother has had a stroke. A woman who likes to be in control of her life and enjoy order to it, Kate is not prepared to deal with the change coming her way, particularly when she meets Nick Sheridan. Nick’s past is one full of skeletons and is a life lived he isn’t proud of. Now, six months after giving his life to Christ, Nick is taking a year off from dating and is content to try and sell his new book while running Leona’s small newspaper during her leave. Rescuing Kate from a near-death experience put the two of them on a collision course of trust, friendship… and attraction. But with his vow to stay away from dating and Kate’s non-existent faith, their fledging relationship comes up against more than one complication. Review: Any new book announcement with this authors name in it is one I take notice of. With exception to one or two of Colleen’s historical novels, when I crack open the pages of her latest novel, I am nearly always confident of a pleasing literary journey. No matter the premise, her books always seem to show up on my yearly to read list because in her writing, readers are fortunate to find that happy medium lighthearted contemporary romance and a slight “edge” of mystery that isn’t terrifying nevertheless is “edgy” enough to dismiss it from falling into the parameters of being considered “cozy mystery.” Without being strictly a mystery, this third novel in her latest series is a more unique premise and is as sweet as its predecessors. Secrets are something Elin Summerhill has lived with for the three years she was married. She existed on little affection and grew comfortable in the chasm between her and husband Tim. Now two years later, Elin is moving on after his death, she’s a single mother and recovering from a heart transplant. Only trouble is, she is experiencing nightmares, dreams of her donor’s murder – and she’s convinced the killer is after her. Enter Mark Everton, an FBI agent – an old acquaintance who is a cousin of Elin’s best friend, and a part of her past she’d rather forget. He’s the one person who may be able to help Elin and the one person whose help she doesn’t want. Continue reading “Seagrass Pier by Colleen Coble”

Top Ten Books on my Summer To-Be-Read

Happy Top Ten Tuesday! It’s been a while since I participated in the fun meme, so I decided today’s sounded easy and we’d go for it.

Like always, I have plenty of novels on my to-be-read tower of novels. It’s kind of like Jenga; you stack them up, pull one out and hope nothing tumbles. Below are the books that are either on that towering stack or are either on their way (hurry up, USPS!) and/or I’m anxiously awaiting opening my email and seeing a tour invitation. Review: Historical novels are hit or miss with me. Since discovering which eras is the “better fit,” I have been able to find a rhythm that seems to work for this girl’s bookshelves. Having only recently read and reviewed Karen’s debut novel (Mistaken), it was an exciting day to open the email with a chance to review the first novel in her new series. Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity. This has a completely different story to tell and it doesn’t settle on just one subject. Abby Fischer has always been the odd one out. She isn’t a delicate lady or a society girl who knows the art of flirting. Instead she’s a farm girl who’s happier climbing trees and muddling through new meetings than she perfecting the art of snagging a beau. Only now her family is about to leave behind all they know in order to get her sister the medical treatment she needs – their family doctor’s treatment for her cancer is making no difference so when Cousin Gerald, and his young protégé (or friend), Robert King bring the family the hope of an experimental new treatment, Abby is determined to see her beloved sister healed. No matter what. Review: Stories that take “normal” and cast it aside for their 300+ pages are a sure way to win my heart. With renowned author Beth Vogt’s latest, that is exactly what Somebody Like You sets out to do… and accomplishes. We meet Haley Ames in the early pages of the book and learn her three-year marriage to Sam was cut short by his dedication to the Army – and weighing on Haley’s mind is his last decision to re-enlist that then drove a wedge between them just before his death. It was enough distance to hold Haley back from telling Sam that she suspected she was pregnant and now, she is alone, three months from a being a mother and trying to move on with life. That is shattered when she sees Sam again on her front porch… only it isn’t Sam, it’s his twin brother Stephan, a brother Haley never knew her husband had. Now, a widow tries to prepare for single motherhood and an estranged brother desperately wants to discover who his best friend had become. Will their two shattered hearts be able to find common ground? Continue reading “Somebody Like You by Beth Vogt”

Review: Captain Dean Watters is a man on a mission. He has a Special Forces team to lead… and secrets to keep buried. But with insurgents terrorizing the Afghan territory – and the young children learning under the teachers there to give them an education – where they are currently stationed, their mission may prove more difficult – especially when the team meets the pretty American schoolteacher, Zahrah Zarrick. As the daughter of a general, Zahrah knows all there is to know about the life of a military man, and much as she loves her father, she felt a calling from God to return to her mother’s homeland and teach the children who otherwise would not receive any form of education. When secrets come to light that reveal Zahrah is not just a high-ranking officer’s daughter, but also a target all on her own, Dean will have to go into the protected areas of his past to be sure than Zahrah’s life isn’t used to compromise the U.S. Military’s missions.
