As her author bio says, pulling the hilarity out of situations is indeed Janice Thompson’s specialty. She writes with a unique flair all her own that has cumulated in a series of books centered on one event; weddings. This book tells the story of wedding dress designer extraordinaire, Gabi Delgado. Or at least the wanna-be designer who is instead working in the shadow of and under a tyrannical boss that is more than a little threatened by his “material girl” when, suddenly by a twist of unavoidable events she becomes the designer everyone wants – particularly when it takes one of his top clients away from him. Things go from bad to worse when the reporter – Jordan Singer – assigned to write a piece on Demetri’s designs and successes also takes an interest in Gabi’s work and decides to feature her along with Demetri. Review: It’s forever the bane of my reading life to never read seasonal books during the season they are using as filler. This past Christmas I was determined to read (and by “read,” I mean actually make it to that last page) a few Christmas novels and did I? Um, no. When this book came around, I figured it was high time I snagged a copy and actually read it. So that’s what I did. Set during the Valentine Day period, it tells the story of the jaded Emma whose trust in love is nothing if not fragile. Her grandparents were the prime example of what it means to be in a marriage with God at the center but then there are her parents. And her sister. With her grandfather’s recent death, Emma leaves behind her life in Seattle to help her grandmother around the house and slowly begins to open her heart to Lane Forrester. But things get complicated when she learns her sister has a claim on Lane. Continue reading “Once Upon a Winter’s Heart by Melody Carlson”

Review: The novels set in the charming beauty of the small Minnesota town Deep Haven is where I was first introduced to best-selling author Susan May Warren. Here was an author who knew how to write compelling characters and keep us interested in their plight. When the 3-book set came to a close, I can remember writing an email to Warren asking if there would be more and if the witty best friend character of Liza would ever have her own story. Her response was that she would enjoy re-visiting the characters but it would ultimately be up to the sales of the books and the publisher. Now, many years later, she has again invited us back to the quaint haven and I am one reader that couldn’t be more thrilled. The story in this yarn revolves around the introverted Issy who, unbeknownst to everyone but her best friend is actually Miss Foolish Heart, a popular radio host who runs her own dating advice web page and hosting gig from her home – and all without having met Mr. Right. When Caleb Knight moves in next door, he is determined to keep his own secrets even as he finds a place in the community as the new football coach. Sparks fly between he and the fearful-of-everything Issy but could her own happily-ever-after really be right next door? Continue reading “My Foolish Heart by Susan May Warren”

Top Ten Books that Will Make You Swoon!

Checking the calendar proves that Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, so with that in mind, the ladies at The Broke and the Bookish have modeled their Top Ten Tuesday meme after the romantic day – and after all, what valentine is better than a good swoon-y book…? Seriously, let’s admit the truth. Way back when seeing this planned topic, I probably squealed or at the very least smiled contemplating how fun putting it together would be. Needless to say, that holds true. Before starting to compile the list, I was a bit “worried” about getting ten books together but… fortunately, I have read plenty of swoon-worthy books on my list of romantic novels – why did I ever doubt… Continue reading “Top Ten Books that Will Make You Swoon!”

Review: Regina Beswick has lived a simple life as a born and bred southern Florida girl. Raised by her loving grandmother and widowed father, Reggie is a no-fuss kind of girl – she would rather rebuild a 70’s Dodge Challenger than worry about social functions that she may be arm candy for. Unbeknownst to Reggie, her family heritage has a secret in its past… a secret that Tanner Burkhart is about to share with her, and consequently turn her world upside down when she learns she isn’t the woman she thought she was – she’s a princess with a country to her name that is about to dissolve if Reggie doesn’t take her rightful place as its sovereign. Top Ten Tuesday: Books that Will Make You Cry

If there is one thing I do know about my reading habits without doubt it’s that I’m not a very external reader. Or in other words, my reactions to books are more internal at the time I’m reading them. Sure, I’ll giggle or smile over some sassy retort but crying… yeah, that’s not me. Nonetheless this doesn’t me that an emotional story doesn’t impact me, it’s just an external reaction rather than a visible one. The Top Ten Tuesday topic this week was something of a challenge because of my personality however here are some of the books I can say, without doubt touched me. Review: Published in 2014, Forget Me Not is actually the first novel in the new self-published series, The Heart’s Spring series falling first in the timeline to its published predecessor Bleeding Heart. Comprised of three novels and a collection of novellas, Forget Me Not is another journey saga – both literal and fugitively. It tells the story of the young Elizabeth Lawson whose young life was shattered when she lost her parents and now as a young 18-year-old, she’s just learned that she has a brother she never met. Upset and seeking something she leaves the safety of her adoptive mother’s home only to fall into trouble and be rescued by a young man named David. Not immune to feeling lost in his place, David instantly feels a familiarity to the young woman and on a whim offers to escort her to Nevada never expecting to feel so much for this girl.
